What a pre-flight can and can't tell you
The figures come from IRS Form 990 filings, reached through ProPublica's free Nonprofit Explorer API. They're the same numbers your own diligence file already contains — gathered in one pass instead of thirty. Filings usually become public a year or more after a fiscal year closes, and organizations under $50,000 in receipts typically file the e-postcard, which shares almost nothing. A quiet row in this table is usually a small or recently formed organization, not a troubling one.
And that is the honest limit of every public-record tool: the numbers describe money, not capacity. Two grantees with identical filings can be in very different shape. Understanding the difference requires asking the people inside each organization — confidentially, so they can answer plainly — which is what a KindTru shared learning cohort does, with consent built in and a five-organization floor on anything you see.
